Haitian women artisans holding handpoured fair trade candles for Prosperity Candle

Not long after the devastating earthquake hit Port-au-Prince in 2010, we decided our next destination would be Haiti. We had visited several times before, our hearts were with Haitians, and interest in entrepreneurial opportunities among Haitian women was as great as everywhere else we had been.

It took us until 2012 to get there, but we wanted to do it right. This time our newly launched nonprofit, Prosperity Catalyst, took the lead. We visited many parts of the country and decided to begin up north in Cap-Haitien. There were a few setbacks, but in time we were able to get the new studio up and running using local beeswax.

Today the candle-making is centered in Port-au-Prince where designs are combined with the stunning metalwork of Croix-des-Bouquets.
